He began his studies at the Royal Flemish Academy of Music in Antwerp under the guidance of the eminent clarinettist Walter Boeykens. While still a student, he was nominated for the first national competition for musicians organised by Social Works for Performers. He subsequently pursued advanced studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he worked with Henri De Roeck.

His early professional career brought extensive orchestral experience with the VRT Orchestra, the Flemish Operaand the Belgian National Orchestra. In 1993, he was involved in the orchestra for the International Queen Elisabeth Competition for Violin, an experience that further broadened his perspective on the demands of large-scale concert performance.

Contemporary music soon became a defining element of his artistic identity. He founded the QO-2 Ensemble, with which he made numerous radio recordings, and travelled to Amsterdam to participate in the Ocean Project by choreographer Merce Cunningham, conceived from an idea by John Cage. His involvement in a recording devoted to the work of Belgian composer Herman Van San, accompanied by its opening performance and presentation at La Monnaie in Brussels, marked an important stage in his development as a performer of contemporary repertoire.

Chamber music has remained equally central to his artistic life. With the salon ensemble Grupetto, he explored the meeting point of music, theatre and cultural history, recording Titanic’s Last Waltz and Marlene Dietrich, Falling in Love Again. His collaboration with pianist Alex Roosemeyers subsequently led to an extensive exploration of Jewish musical culture, bringing classical repertoire into dialogue with accomplished jazz musicians and creating a distinctive form of musical crossover.

His artistic curiosity has also extended into musical theatre and comedy. Together with Ron de Rauw and Rembert De Smet, he created a vibrant musical production in which contrasting cultures and musical traditions encounter one another, ranging from Western pop and rock to South American and Balkan music, enriched by a distinctly Spanish character.

Peter Merckx has maintained a particularly strong connection with contemporary chamber music through his work with the Prometheus Ensemble. With the ensemble, he has appeared in concerts and radio recordings throughout Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Ireland and France, including performances at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

A performance of Mauricio Kagel’s Variety led to his collaboration with the Hermes Ensemble, which has since become a permanent artistic home. With Hermes Ensemble, he has performed throughout Belgium and across Europe, including appearances in the Netherlands, France, Germany, England, Austria and Italy. His work with the ensemble reflects his enduring engagement with adventurous repertoire and the creative possibilities of contemporary performance.

His recorded work with Hermes Ensemble includes a double-DVD box produced in collaboration with the Royal Belgian Avant-Garde Film Archive, Surrealism and Experiment in Belgian Cinema, featuring music exclusively by Belgian composers. He has also contributed to recordings of the music of Wim Henderickx, including Disappearing in Light (2011) and Triptych (2014).

In 2014, Merckx was awarded first prize in Kürten for his interpretation of Schönheit by Karlheinz Stockhausen, an achievement that reflects his particular affinity with the demanding and exploratory language of contemporary music.

Alongside his concert career, Peter Merckx is active in studio work and regularly collaborates with composer Dominique Pauwels, as well as appearing as a guest with the Spectra Ensemble.

His commitment to the clarinet extends beyond performance. Drawing on his experience as a professional musician and teacher, Merckx developed the Ergo Woodwind Comfortplayer (EWC), an innovative second thumb rest for the clarinet. The invention is the culmination of three years of dedicated research and more than two decades of practical experience as a performing clarinettist and educator.
